Books by Gabe Wander
Sam wakes up early on July 4th to the news that his Dad is getting ready to deploy again. They spend an action-packed day together, learning life lessons along the way about being a man. How will Sam harness his unique impulses and strengths to deal with an aggressive bully? Will he work hard and persevere when faced with adversity? How should he handle an accidental punch during a battle royale wrestling match?
This book introduces positive male principles and ideas that have become lost or diluted over time, reinforces traditional values, and offers parents the framework to foster meaningful discussions and encourage their young men—ensuring their social, moral, and masculine development—while making the most of the time they spend together as a family.
This book is for:
- Fathers, mothers, and grownups to read to – and with – their boys.
- Young readers of all ages will discover sight words, vocabulary builders, and key terms for understanding life lessons on manhood.
- Finally, the wonderful full-page illustrations will capture even the youngest child’s attention and spark their imagination.
Gabriel Wander is not only an incredibly intentional and thoughtful parent (check out his posts on Primerirly) along with his wife Sarah, but he’s a generous one — sharing the lessons he wished to impart to his son before leaving on a military deployment in this beautiful children’s book to enrich our families. Our kids will be better prepared for life having read his advice, and we will be better parents just for remembering what matters.

An incredible resource for any father of boys! My friend Gabriel Wander served our country as a special forces medic. When he had small boys, he could not find a children’s book that instilled the lessons he wanted to teach his sons. So… he wrote one! If any father here wants a copy, I’ll buy them one!

Gabe and I served together as enlisted men in the 90s. We’ve remained buddies through the years and I had the honor of doing a heritage film for his recently passed WW2 badass Grandpa. If you’ve got little kids, particularly boys, support a special operator, entrepreneur, anesthesiologist, Manchu, Tropic Lightning, airborne medic, EFMB-wearing, war veteran, husband, dad, and transplanted Texan!

If you are raising young men, consider picking up this book to gain wisdom in doing so. The proper way. This was penned by my great friend, brother, and fellow Army CRNA. I’ve seen Gabe himself mature and be someone that I look up to for the example he sets. This is in no way possible without his amazing wife Sarah. Gabriel Wander, proud of you my friend and I miss your company.

I’m very pleased to share this book written by Gabriel Wander. I don’t have sons, but I’m ordering it anyway because it’s always a good idea for girls to know how boys should behave.

Pros: Great Messages, Character Building, Easy to Read, Heart Felt, Life Lessons.
Cons: None
I got this book for my grandson. I appreciate the life lessons and messages that are taught in this book. This book really resonates with me as a veteran and a man that is not ashamed to be a man and teach my grandson that lessons of what it means to be a good person. I love the traditional values and the thought that it is okay to be a man and teach the youth of this country the same. We liked this so much .. we are giving this as Christmas gifts this year.

Well illustrated and easy to read. Although it’s formatted as a kid’s book, the message is also a perfect guide and reminder to parents, and parents-to-be, on how to be a strong role model. If the gender reveal is BLUE, this book is for YOU!

I really enjoyed reading this down to earth straight forward book on how to teach our boys how to become responsible young men in today’s society. Would highly recommend for parents with young boys and also girls.

I bought this for my 13 yr old son and quickly realized that my 6yr old son needed his own copy. First off, the illustrations are beautiful and really makes the pages come to life. But the message is completely on point to how we should be raising our boys. Respect, compassion, and bravery were excellent concepts throughout the book. I love it when I find a book like this that really sparks dialogue between my kids and I. I will be buying this book as presents for all of my nephews as well.

Gabe does a fantastic job in highlighting the little things that can set the foundation for a successful transition from young man to an adult. Society needs more life lessons like this.
About Gabe Wander
Serving over two decades in the Army, Major (Ret) Gabe Wander is a combat veteran many times over. He was born Jewish, raised as a Christian missionary, and lived in over thirty countries with his parents and seven siblings by the time he was twelve years old. He enlisted in the Army at seventeen as a Combat Medic and spent time in the 25th Infantry Division, where he was quickly promoted to Sergeant, and eventually earned the coveted position of an Officer and Nurse Anesthesiologist with the elite Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) at Fort Bragg, NC in the only Tier 1 unit that provides direct medical support to JSOC special mission units.
While training for one of his deployments, he had a near fatal parachute injury that required several emergency surgeries, and remained hospitalized for nearly a month. After a long recovery and just before his next deployment, his wife became pregnant with their first son. The nightly harrowing missions, combined with the lingering effects of his injuries, made him acutely aware of his own mortality. For the first time, he feared not coming home, and so he began to scribble what he’d pass on to his unborn son should he never get to see him. These weren’t just life lessons, but tangible actions he could incorporate into his everyday life to both mold him into a good man and help him flourish. He added to this list with every deployment and pregnancy until he safely retired from the Army. As of today, he has three sons, the eldest of whom is eight years old, so he gathered his ideas of raising men and assembled them so that they could have a daily impact on his young men.
Gabe graduated summa cum laude from the UT Health Science Center at Houston, is an adjunct faculty at the U.S. Army Graduate Program in Anesthesia Nursing, and is the founder and CEO of Wander Staffing – a healthcare solutions partner to the U.S. government. He remains active in advancing American interests abroad by supporting, consulting and training civilian, military, and paramilitary units on anesthesia practices in austere and resource constrained environments.
He is married to his beautiful wife Sarah, together homeschool their 4 youngest children, and in his spare time enjoys lifting weights, camping, bee keeping, hunting, the gun range, and playing sports with his kids.
